Predatory journals enter biomedical databases through public funding

2020

Predatory publishing is an international, cross disciplinary threat to the integrity of the scientific system • A worrying number of articles published in predatory journals are indexed in biomedical databases such as PubMed, the free access biomedical database maintained by the National Library of Medicine • Public funding, under open access policies, seems to be the mechanism by which articles are displayed in PubMed. • Providing guidance to publicly funded authors on how to publish their work in legitimate open-access venues will likely stop the wasteful use of public money to cover the fees of predatory journals.

Finnish cultural policy as public funding: Regime view across policy domains

2022

Public funding is a key part of Nordic cultural policy. This article approaches the Finnish cultural policy regime from the perspective of state funding, which can be seen as a direct demonstration of public cultural policy. We perform an empirical investigation of the state funding for cultural activities using budget data from 2019 supplemented with information given by altogether 53 public officials representing Finnish ministries. Thus, we examine Finnish cultural policy as a public policy through the different governmental policy domains that support and govern artistic and cultural activities with public finances. Cultural support is investigated as a substantive policy aspect of diff…

2011

A gender study of principal investigator lead public R&D centres and funding

2021

To survive and grow public Research and Development (R&D) centres need to raise competitive funds (Bazeley 1998; Lee and Om 1996; Muñoz 2007; Santamaría, Brage-Gil and Modrego 2010). The factors that can influence the capacity of national R&D teams within R&D centres to apply for and obtain competitive funding does not seem to have been studied in depth. The purpose of study is to firstly, to examine whether a consistent set of priorities defined by R&D centre lead principal investigators secures more competitive funding. Secondly, to examine whether the PI gender moderates the effect of the PI’s priorities on the amount of competitive public funds that the R&D team of the PI obtains. Our s…

La mafia sui Nebrodi e le frodi europee nel settore agro-zootecnico: l'attività di contrasto alla luce dei recenti interventi legislativi

2020

The book is the research thesis of Gabriele Minì for the grants that the Falcone Foundation and the Sicilian Regional Assembly award annually to young graduates of Sicilian universities. It deals with the abuse of public funding of agriculture in the Monti Nebrodi area of Sicily (province of Messina). After an accurate indication of the mechanisms for obtaining European funding to support agricultural and zootechnical activities, the book describes the forms of illegal exploitation of this by mafia organisations. The analysis also refers to case studies and describes the most significant events in this field. In particular, it highlights the importance of administrative prevention tools that…
